What is Chinese Medicine
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that was developed more than 3000 years ago and yet continues to meet our current health care needs.   TCM consists of many modalities, some of which include Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Tui Na Massage, Lifestyle Counseling and Dietary Recommendations.  Today, TCM is commonly being used by many as a primary choice for health care and is often recommended by Western Medical practitioners to provide patients with the best care.

TCM focuses on the importance of maintaining a balance in the body, allowing for the free-flow of Qi (life-energy, pronounced “chee”) throughout the meridians of the body.  According to TCM, there are numerous meridians (channels) located throughout the body, each of which is associated with specific organs.  When there is a blockage or lack of Qi  in one or more of these meridians, Qi cannot flow properly, and the result is illness.  The goal of TCM is to foster the proper movement of Qi, allowing the body to balance and begin healing itself, treating both the health concern directly and its underlying causes.
What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one form of treatment used in TCM.  It consists of the use of very thin, sterile, disposable needles, which are gently and painlessly inserted into select acupuncture point locations, chosen specifically for their actions and for the diagnosis made by the practitioner.  It is the insertion and subtle manipulation of these needles that allows for the body to begin to heal and restore itself.  In fact, acupuncturists at our clinic are trained in non-insertive acupuncture as well, where needles do not even penetrate the skin!  Your practitioner will select acupuncture points and a treatment style that is specifically tailored to your unique health care needs.  Additional therapeutic modalities such as tui na (therapeutic massage), gua sha, cupping and moxibustion are added when necessary to enhance the treatment.
What is Herbal Medicine?

Chinese Herbal Medicine, just like acupuncture, has been used for thousands of years.  There are over 350 individual herbs commonly used, from which a select number are chosen and combined to create a formula specific for the patient and the condition being addressed.    The use of Chinese Herbs allows for a stronger and continuous treatment, which can be maintained by the patient between acupuncture visits.  Your practitioner will determine if herbs will be a beneficial part of your treatment plan.

Chinese Herbs have been proven safe and effective, and are commonly found as ingredients in Western pharmaceuticals.  All the herbs distributed in this clinic are of the highest quality and grade and are from natural sources, some of which include various parts of trees, plants, flowers and minerals.
