What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that was developed more than 3000 years ago and yet continues to meet our current health care needs. TCM consists of many modalities, some of which include Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Tui Na Massage, Lifestyle Counseling and Dietary Recommendations. Today, TCM is commonly being used by many as a primary choice for health care and is often recommended by Western Medical practitioners to provide patients with the best care.
TCM focuses on the importance of maintaining a balance in the body, allowing for the free-flow of Qi (life-energy, pronounced “chee”) throughout the meridians of the body. According to TCM, there are numerous meridians (channels) located throughout the body, each of which is associated with specific organs. When there is a blockage or lack of Qi in one or more of these meridians, Qi cannot flow properly, and the result is illness. The goal of TCM is to foster the proper movement of Qi, allowing the body to balance and begin healing itself, treating both the health concern directly and its underlying causes.
